A Scottish team who took measurements during 85 car journeys found readings broke World Health Organization limits, Tobacco Control journal reports.
The British Medical Association says all smoking in cars should be banned.
Currently, it is legal in the UK..
Children are particularly susceptible because they have faster breathing rates, a less developed immune system and are largely unable to escape or avoid exposure to second-hand smoke, says Dr Sean Semple, of the University of Aberdeen.

So, I think both outstanding artists are going to be able to make sure that they’re moving forward and not going backwards.”

No African Leader Worthy Of Leadership Award
No-one has been awarded the world's most valuable prize, the $5 million Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, which was due to be announced Monday.
For the third time in six years, no African leader has been deemed worthy of the prize, awarded by Sudanese billionaire Mo Ibrahim's foundation.
"The Prize Committee reviewed a number of eligible candidates but none met the criteria needed to win this Award. The Award is about excellence in leadership." the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Prize Committee said in a press release.
The prize is a $5 million award paid over 10 years and $200,000 annually for life after that.
It is awarded to democratically elected leaders who have stepped down in the past three years after serving their constitutionally mandated term, and have demonstrated "excellence in office."
Ibrahim, chairman and founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, said: "Since we launched the Prize six years ago, we have had three winners, and three years without."
Last year's winner was President Pedro Verona Pires of Cape Verde for his "vision in transforming Cape Verde into a model of democracy, stability and increased prosperity."
Other previous winners have been Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique in 2007 and Festus Mogae of Botswana in 2008. Nelson Mandela was made the honorary inaugural Laureate in 2006.
In 2009 and 2010 there was no winner.

Three Children Dead In House Fire
Three children and a woman have died and three others are in hospital following a house fire in Essex.
Firefighters called to the property in Barn Mead, Harlow, at about 01:45 BST found flames coming out of the front and back doors.
Two boys aged 13 and six, a girl aged 11 and the woman, believed to be the children's mother, were declared dead at the scene.
A girl, three, and a boy, nine, have serious burns. A man has minor burns.

Possessing Small Amount Of Drugs 'Should Not Be A Crime'
The penalties for drug misuse should be relaxed so that possession of small amounts would no longer be a criminal offence, the government has been urged.

Its detailed report concludes the UK is wasting much of the £3bn it spends each year on tackling illicit drugs.
The Home Office says drug use is falling and it does not plan to alter its approach.
The report, called A Fresh Approach to Drugs, says the annual estimated cost to England and Wales of class A drug use is £15bn.
It says that while drug use and drug problems have declined in the UK in recent years, there are still about 2,000 drug-related deaths each year and 380,000 problem drug users.
